Spells

*Small note 4-23-99 - Please do not ask me to provide you with specific spells, as that has not revealed itself to be my purpose in sharing information with you. My sole purpose here is to give you a foundation to either find or create your OWN spells, that will work for YOU.

Wicca, or Witchcraft, is a positive religion which reveres nature and worships diety. Magick is a practice of most Wiccans and involves harnessing and utilizing the power which surrounds and is in each and every one of us. Please keep in mind the Wiccan Rede when performing any magickal act "And it harm none, do what thou wilt". Magick should be used only for positive goals, never to harm or to control another person. Also remember the rule of three: that whatever you do shall return to you threefold. Keep your magick positive, and you surround yourself with positive energy. Use your magick to cause harm to another and you wind up bringing harm to yourself as well. Magick IS real. It DOES work. Use it carefully and respectfully and you will bring about the positive benefits you want in your life!

Wicca or Witta as it was several thousands of years ago in Ireland, was a very simple, "homespun" religion, a faith of those who lived close to the earth and felt the gentle pulse of her ebb and flow. In general, most Wiccans of that time were solitary Witches, who chose to do their worship and spell work on their own. Others worked within their close-knit family groups. The items they chose to utilize in their magick were items that were readily available, the gathering of many complex tools or herbs to perform a particular spell was not done. Modern Wicca has since become more involved and complex, just as modern life itself is. Many Witches nowadays choose spells and rituals which are elaborate and quite complex; however, I prefer to use some of the more simple and basic spells and rituals, and find them to work just as successfully as the more involved spells. Whether you choose to simplify your spells and rituals or to use a more elaborate approach is up to you, it is a matter of personal choice, and one way is certainly not more correct than the other.

I would suggest that you read several of the excellent books out there on herbs, gemstones, oils and incense, and spells and spellcrafting. (See my bookstore for the titles) There are hundreds, and possibly thousands of books on spells and spellcrafting. Many are quite good, but unfortunately, many are not. I certainly believe that reading books on spells and spellcrafting can do much to further your magickal knowledge and training. I would, however, offer that once you feel that you have a solid foundation on the knowledge of spellcrafting and the use of herbs, stones, oils, etc. that you should begin to experiment and start coming up with your own personal spells and rituals. I firmly believe that the more you put into your spells, the more you will get out of them, and the energy you use in coming up with your own spells will definitely aid you in reaching your magickal goals.

There are many things to consider before working your spell, such as the moon phase, planetary and astrological influences, days of the week, hours of the day, and color correspondences. For example, if the spell you are going to work is to draw something to you (such as money or love), you would perform it during the waxing moon (the period of time when the moon's energy is building, between the new moon and full moon). If you desire to remove something (such as a bad habit or a health problem) you would perform it during the waning moon (the period of time between the full moon and the next new moon). There are also certain days of the week which are more appropriate for certain spells, for example, Friday (planetary ruler, Venus) is used for love magick, Saturday (Saturn) for banishing, etc... These things are important in determining when to work your magick, however in an emergency (such as healing a sick child, etc.) you can perform magick at any time, whether or not it is the correct day of the week, moon phase, etc.

There are four things, however, that are absolutely necessary and essential to working successful magick: a genuine need; a deep, emotional desire; the knowledge to work the spell; and the ability to visualize your magickal goal and result. If these four conditions are present, you have everything you need to successfully perform magick. If any of these are lacking, you probably will not be able to accomplish your magickal goals.

To work any act of magick, you must also charge or empower the objects that you will use in your spell or ritual. Your magickal tools should already be charged, but you will need to attune with and empower any herbs, stones, or other objects that you intend to use in your magick. This is done by holding the object in your power hand (the hand you write with) and feeling your energy and your need flow into the object. Oftentimes it is tempting to cut to the chase and begin working the actual spell without taking the time necessary to properly empower your magickal objects. This is a big mistake! It is this investment of your personal energy which makes the spell work...while it is true that magick takes place in the mind where your thoughts act upon the astral plane to form things which will manifest, most Witches use herbs, stones, etc. which are known to share an affinity for the desired goal. The magick is not in the objects themselves, they merely act as a catalyst which helps you focus, direct, and receive energy.

Ý LUNAR MAGICK

The Moon is a symbol of Nature's cycle of birth, life, and rebirth. It represents the feminine principle, which is personified by the Triple Goddess (Maiden/Mother/Crone). It is important to consider the appropriate lunar phases (Waxing, Waning, or Full Moon) when planning your magick. It is also extremely useful to align your spellwork to coincide with the appropriate astrological influences, to further aid your magickal goals. For example, spells and rituals involving the element of earth should be performed during a time when the Moon is positioned in one of the three astrological earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn, spells involving the element of fire during Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius, spells involving the element of air during Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius, and spells involving the element of Water during Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces.

Below are listed astrological signs and their correspondences to magickal applications:

MOON IN ARIES is the best time to work magick involving leadership, authority, rebirth, spiritual conversion, or willpower. Healing rituals for ailments of the face, head, or brain are also done during this period of time.

MOON IN TAURUS is the best time to work magick for love, real estate, material acquisitions, and money. Healing rituals for ailments of the throat, neck, and ears are also done during this period of time.

MOON IN VIRGO is the best time to work magick involving employment, intellectual matters, health, and dietary concerns. Healing rituals for ailments of the intestines or nervous system are also done during this period of time.

Ý PLANETARY CORRESPONDENCES

Another consideration of effective spell-crafting are the days of the week and their planetary correspondences. Each day of the week has an energy, or personality, which corresponds to a specific planet. Ý FRAGRANCE ASSOCIATIONS

It is important to carefully align your magickal acts. Once your magick is set in motion, it will achieve your magickal goal. This process has been called the domino effect, as each act represents one domino leading to your ultimate desire. As important as selecting the proper Day of the Week, Astrological Correspondence, etc. is the proper use of fragrance. Fragrance affects the central nervous system and the auric field. It can either raise or lower bodily vibrations, either elevating your mood or depressing it. Below is a list of commonly used fragrances and their planetary rulers:

Ý COLOR CORRESPONDENCES

Yet another "domino" to align is color. It has long been known that color radiations have a tremendous influence upon our health, thoughts, and actions. It is therefore important to use the appropriate color of candles, gemstones, etc. to further add power to your magick. The following chart will give you a list of appropriate colors to use for each day of the week. Please note that my list may differ from others you have seen or read. Color use is basically an instinctual and personal choice, and you will find that the more you work magick, the more you will begin to rely on your own color choices for your workings. Color/Moon Correspondence

The following is a list of color and planetary correspondences to assist you in developing and working your spells...there are many variations to this information depending on which magickal system you employ...these are the particular days of the week and color symbolisms that I use and that work for me...please feel free to change this information to fit your particular needs

Monday (Moon) - White/Silver/Gray -- White is used to build purity, sincerity, and truth; to repel negative energies and raise vibrations; balance the aura, contact spirit guides, emotional healing, protection, healing of children and pets, healing from the birth process, dreams, ancestors, instinct, memory, virginity, child bearing, and theft. White may also be used as an "all-purpose" color to substitute for any other color. Gray and silver are used to cancel and neutralize spells which no longer serve your purposes; also used to cause a stalemate in a situation. Fragrances: Eucalyptus, Jasmine, Myrrh, Sandalwood.

Tuesday (Mars) - Red -- Lust, physical desire, courage, war, aggression, enemies, pain, danger, energizing and stimulating, health, strength, vigor, (sexual love -- cherry reds). Be careful when using the darker reds, as they stand for wars, battles, blood, danger, and hate. Fragrances: Carnation, Dragon's Blood, Ginger, Pine, Peppermint.

Wednesday (Mercury) - Orange -- Energy building, success, stimulation, attraction, mental agility, attracts good luck and fortune, builds vitality, energy, and stamina, encouragement, discourages laziness, adaptability. Fragrances: Bayberry, Lavendar, Peppermint.

Thursday (Jupiter) - Purple/Royal Blue -- Expansion in all forms (love, healing, wealth, etc.), magickal powers, desires, riches, honor, oaths, changeability, impulsiveness. When working with expansion, make sure you currently have the item or quality you wish to expand first. If not, use another color to first obtain that item or quality, and then use purple to expand...Fragrances: Nutmeg, Sage, Sandalwood.

Friday (Venus) - Green/Pink -- Green is used for fertility, luck, finances, and healing. It attracts success and facilitates communication with plants and faeries. Pink is for romantic, emotional, spiritual love (usually without the sexual connotation). Pink raises vibrations, facilitates spiritual healing, banishes negative vibrations and hate, and promotes honor, morality, and unselfishness. Fragrances: Cherry, Rose, Thyme, Vanilla.

Saturday (Saturn) - Black/Brown -- Black is used to absorb negativity, remove obstacles, bad habits, unwanted emotions, etc. Also used to cause confusion, discord, evil, and loss. It can be an extremely useful color, but if used improperly, it can cause disaster!!! Brown is useful to attract money by working with your hands, and can also connect and ground you to Mother Earth. Fragrances: Iris, Pansy, Black Orchid, Patchouly.

Sunday (Sun) - Gold/Yellow -- Gold is used to attract money and power, to attract happy people to your life, to heal, to rejuvenate, to charm; builds confidence, useful in persuasion; gives energy and intelligence to make proper decisions in financial affairs. Yellow is used to gain insight into problems, attract others, obtain knowledge and facilitate retention of learning. Fragrances: Cedar, Clove, Cinnamon, Frankincense, Rosemary.

In addition, I use blue in spells to ease stress and anxiety, calm and soothe, bring health (especially emotional health), give peace, patience, tranquility, and to promote understanding. I usually use light blues on Mondays, and medium blues on either Wednesdays or Thursdays...(use Lavendar or Sandalwood Fragrances).

Violet can be used successfully on either Wednesdays or Thursdays to promote healing, bring peace, and increase spirituality...(Again, I use Lavendar or Sandalwood Fragrances).

Ý Circle Casting

When you are ready to begin your spell, it is important that you cast a circle, or create a Sacred Space, to provide protection, keep out undesirable energies, and contain the power which you will raise until it is time to release it to the Universe. Depending upon your own personal preferences, you may create this space by performing a ritual as simple as walking around your altar three times, visualizing a blue circle of flames, or something a little more elaborate, such as the following ritual:

Beginning in the East, walk deosil (clock-wise) around the circle, sprinkling a salt-water mixture (which has been previously cleansed). While doing so, say "salt and water by casting thee, no spell nor unknown purpose be, except in true accord with me, and as my will, so mote it be!" Next, take the incense and, beginning in the East, walk deosil around the circle, allowing the smoke from the incense to cleanse the circle. While doing so, say "I banish from this circle, all unclean and evil forces". Back in the East, draw an Earth banishing pentagram in the air. Next, pick up the sword (or athame) from the altar and again, starting in the East, walk slowly deosil around the circle. Say, "I conjure thee O circle of power, that thou be as a boundary between the world of men and the realms of the mighty ones. A guardian and a protection to preserve and contain the power that we/I shall raise within until such time that we choose to release it. Therefore do I bless and consecrate thee." The circle is complete...

It is important NOT to leave your circle until it has been uncast. If you do need to leave the circle for any reason, you must first cut a "doorway". Standing in the East, take athame and cut straight down through the air, come back up, and go down again. Now take and put hands together in front of you, and move the three circles (saltwater, incense, sword) apart (as if you are parting a curtain). Walk through the circle, turn and, facing the circle, close the opening with your hands. This will seal the circle so that nothing can enter or leave while you are gone. To leave a circle open would be an open invitation for an entity (good or evil) to enter. Keeping evil out of the circle was the reason for making a circle of protection in the first place, so make sure not to leave it open!!! When you return to the circle, follow the same procedure. Cut the circle, open (pull it apart), step through, and close again.

------------------------------------------------------

Ý The Cone of Power

The cone of power is a vortex of magickal energy which is raised within a circle by one or more witches working for the same goal. One of the most common methods of power raising is dancing. Tradition dictates that one dance deosil (clockwise) for spells of increase or attraction, and widdershins (counterclockwise) for decreasing or banishing spells. Start the dance at a steady pace using whatever music you wish as an accompanyment. Then slowly begin to speed up the pace, continuing in this manner until you can feel the mass of energy raised above you. Then, concentrating on the goal, release the energy to go to where it is needed. Other methods of raising power include drumming, chanting, and others...

------------------------------------------------------

Ý The Elements of Spell Construction

1. Clearly understand and define your magickal need. It helps to write it out on paper.
2. Gather together all the items you will need for your spell, such as candles, herbs, gemstones, athame, cup, etc. and empower these items.
3. Decide on your words of power, and create an appropriate chant if so desired. It is helpful to memorize these, so as not to interrupt the flow of energy while trying to remember what you are going to say next.
4. If you will be invoking a particular Diety, decide on who and write out and memorize any special prayers and invocations that you will use.
5. Plan how you will visualize your goal...this is very important!
6. Decide when and where you will work your spell.
7. At the appropriate time, gather what you will use and go to the place where you will perform the spell.
8. Cast your circle, or create your Sacred Space.
9. Invite whatever elementals, faeries, spirits, or Dieties you wish to have present as you work.
10. Clear your mind and begin visualizing your goal.
11. Raise energy within yourself and pour it into your magickal objects.
12. Use your words of power, light your candles, charge your stones, dance or sing. Do whatever you have decided to do to focus your attention and raise energy.
13. When you feel that you have put as much energy into your spell as you possibly can, send the energy out to do your will. Relax, throw up your arms, raise a tool, kneel, or do whatever else makes you feel the energy being sent.
14. Finish your spell with words such as "So Mote It Be". It is a statement of completion and an affirmation that you know your magick is successful.
15. When you are ready, close your circle and thank the elementals, faeries, Dieties, etc. who have been with you to help.
16. Ground your energy -- see it dissipate and return to the earth.
17. Record the ritual in your Book of Shadows.

Wiccan Food Magic

Use your imagination to do each of the following. You may find it more powerful if, at least for the first time, you do each rite in numerical order, before trying the next. This needn't be all in one sitting.

RITUAL#1
Everything in creation is made of the energy. Even something as seemingly lifeless as a rock is made of a living breathing -- yes, breathing -- dynamic energy. As you eat your meal, eat the food conscious of its raw power coming into you. Be specific: focus on just that most basic life force, nothing more sophisticated.

RITUAL #2
And\or eat the food conscious of its power specifically as a product of the earth. EG: feel the power of the earth in the food entering you as you eat it, then the power of the sun in it entering you, then the power of recycled stars in it entering you. You may want to try imbibing each of these three specifics one at a time, then any other traits the universe gives to all food.

RITUAL #3:
A perfect mother, that's who the Goddess is. She does not judge us, nor condemn us. Her pleasure is to love us. Let your food fill you with Her love.

RITUAL #4:
Food for battle: whatever traits you need for battle, imagine the food giving them to you as you eat.

Candle Magick

The dancing flames of candles have been used as a Witches' tool for centuries. By setting the proper atmosphere, candles are used to help increase a spell's power, or to influence a particular power. Candles absorb one's personal energy and release this energy when burned Candle colour is very important when performing magick, for each colour emits a particular vibration and attracts certain influences. The following list is meant to be used as a guide in choosing a candle colour for your personal use. Please remember that colour is another "tool" and you need choose what works best for you in your magickal workings. If you do not have the colour mentioned for a particular need, allow your intuition and the Goddess guide you in choosing one for your purposes.

The candles you use should be ones you yourself make out of beeswax, using natural dyes and essential oils, if desired. Beeswax sheets are available at most hobby stores, and are a fast and easy way to make your own candles at home. Realizing this is not always possible, you may use what is readily available to you. Prior to using any candle in your workings you should cleanse the candle and anoint it with a small amount of oil during the waxing phase of the moon. This consecrates the candle and charges it with magickal energy. You can also carve or paint appropriate magickal symbols onto your candles, to further empower the candles with those energies. The heated tip of your athame works well for this purpose. It is best to use one candle per ritual or spell, and to not use a candle that has been used previously for another purpose. It is also best to allow the candle to burn out by itself, as blowing it out may disperse the energy contained within.

WHITE:
A balance of all colours. Symbolizes peace, purity , innocence and power of a higher nature. Promotes peace, tranquillity, purification; truth, spirituality, and sincerity. Also used for meditation, truth seeking, spiritual enlightenment, summoning spirit guides, astral travel, and to enhance psychic abilities. Can be as protective as black and may be substituted for any colour candle. Healing properties include treating broken bones, relieving dental pain and increasing milk production in nursing mothers. White is also a Goddess symbol.

YELLOW:
A stimulating and uplifting colour that is the colour of creativity; intelligence, confidence; movement and energy. Connects to clairvoyance, divination, wisdom, learning; imagination, and inspiration as well as the power of concentration and communication. Used in healing skin conditions as well as stomach complaints and menstrual cramps. Yellow symbolizes the element of Air.

ORANGE:
Is a stimulating and energizing colour. It connects to attraction, stimulation, control, personal strength, authority, and power. Also encouragement, adaptability, luck, and sudden changes. It attracts the characteristics wanted from other tools, spells and rituals. Very good for healing coughs, colds and asthma as well as arthritis and exhaustion.

GOLD:
Colour that promotes understanding and attracts the powers of cosmic influences; intuition, persuasion, charm and confidence. Beneficial in rituals intended to bring about fast luck or financial benefits, or in rituals honouring solar deities.

PINK / ROSE:
A positive colour symbolic of emotional love, nurturing relationships and romance. Promotes spiritual awakening, healing of the spirit, femininity, friendships, honor and morality. It is the standard colour of rituals to draw affections and brings friendly, lively conversation to the dinner table. Excellent for treating anxiety and depression, as well as ailments of the heart.

RED:
The fiery, invigorating colour of energy and life. Always connected to blood, birth and death; and sex. Connects with love, passion, fertility, physical energy and strength. Increases magnetism in rituals and is used in defensive magick. Also emotes courage and enthusiasm. Good in health, strength and vigor spells and defensive magick. Used in healing neuralgias and exhaustion. Red symbolizes the element of Fire as well as being a God Symbol.

PURPLE/VIOLET:
Vibrating colour that is highly spiritual and traditionally connected to mysticism, inspiration, wisdom, idealism, purification; success, peace; and power. Aids in meditation, sensitivity and higher psychic talents; as well as connecting to idealism, ambition, power, success and household protection. Healing properties include the treatment of allergies, sleep disorders and stress-related disorders.

MAGENTA:
A combination of red and violet that is a very high vibrational frequency that tends to work fast. This colour energizes rituals where immediate action and high levels of power or spiritual healing are required, such as quick changes, exorcism or spiritual healing.

BROWN:
An earthy, balanced colour, used to attract money and financial success. It aids in emotional stability and balance, eliminates indecisiveness, improves powers of concentration, study, intuition, and telepathy. Also connects also to finding lost objects. Aids in the protection of familiars and household pets as well as animal healing.

INDIGO:
A vitalizing colour of inertia; used to cleanse the spirit and remove fear. Used in rituals that require a deep meditative state, to neutralize another's magick, or to counteract negative energy. Healing properties include dementia, depression, and mental disorders.

BLUE:
A cool colour that soothes and relaxes. Blue is a primary spiritual colour, used in rituals to obtain wisdom, tranquillity, harmony, peace, inner light and truth. Connects to inspiration, occult power, protection, understanding, good health, patience and loyalty. Aids in meditation as it connects to intellect and mind. Promotes happiness, laughter and joviality. Used in treating insomnia, high blood pressure, and minor wounds. Blue symbolizes the element of Water.

GREEN:
The colour that connects to nature, fertility, and rejuvenation. Stimulates work involving financial issues and money; aids good fortune, prosperity, luck; ambition and success. Bringer of love and renewal, it is an emotional soother and balancer, used to counteract greed and jealousy. A good colour for treating headaches, colds and nervousness. Green is the colour of the Earth element and is a Goddess Symbol.

SILVER / GRAY:
Neutral colour that removes negative energy or influences and encourages stability. Useful when pondering complex issues during meditation and in magic, this colour often sparks confusion; it also negates or neutralizes when needed. Helps develop psychic abilities and attracts the influence of the Goddess.

BLACK:
Burned for positive purposes, this colour opens up the deeper levels of the unconscious. Black is used in rituals to induce a deep meditational state and is good for banishing evil or negativity. Connects to self control, quiet power, and resilience, as it absorbs negativity and destroys it; offers strength and support in spells; protects from retribution and is also an aid during loss.
